University isn’t for everyone and with rising costs and no guarantee of jobs upon graduation, many school and college leavers are considering other options.
Students with an interest and aptitude in sport and fitness should consider qualifying as a personal trainer to give an excellent foundation on which to build a career in the fitness and leisure industry. We have an excellent track record training school and college leavers with 69.5% of all our trainees under the age of 25.
The Training Room course gives individuals an excellent foundation on which to build their fitness career and within two months of enrolling with The Training Room, you could be working…
Emma Sleight, 21, left university and qualified as a personal trainer in June 2012
Emma started university after gaining excellent A grade A Levels: her intention was to study English and media with a view to a career in sports broadcasting. However, she soon realised university life wasn’t for her. As a fitness enthusiast and part-time consultant at her local gym, Emma thought about making her hobby her career. “I really love the buzz of the gym environment and the interaction with such a wide variety of people” says Emma. “The six-week intensive course offered by The Training Room really appealed as having made the decision to switch course I wanted to qualify quickly and get started on my new career path.”
Emma started work immediately after graduating from The Training Room at a nearby gym. She works as a personal trainer, runs Boxercise classes, does gym inductions, writes programmes for members and conducts tours of the gym where she works. She is continuing to train to add further skills and gain more experience.
Ben Goss, 20, joined The Training Room straight from sixth form in September 2011
Ben has always had a flair for fitness and was actively interested in the subject at school. He studied GCSE PE and A Level PE and spent plenty of time in the gym. Ben didn’t like the idea of going to university and was worried about the debt he’d run up. A local gym was seeking staff and advised Ben that if he gained a Level 3 personal trainer qualification he would be considered for the job.
Ben opted for the e-Learning course at The Training Room as that suited his lifestyle. “I really liked the home study option as I was already used to independent studying from my A Level courses and was happy with the idea of e-learning and using the technology to research, learn, submit work and receive support and comments from my online tutor,” says Ben. “The course was quite intense but my A Level PE gave me a distinct advantage!”
Ben started his e-learning course in September 2011 and qualified as a personal trainer in January 2012 and walked straight into the gym job.
Ashleigh Gibb, 22, left university after 15 months and graduated from The Training Room on February 22, 2013
Initially when she left university, Ashleigh didn’t know what to do. An accomplished hockey player and runner, Ashleigh also enjoys the gym environment and this spurred her on to seek work in the fitness industry. Ashleigh enrolled on The Training Room’s six week intensive course in Reading in January and qualified on February 22. She immediately found work at Oxford’s Whitehorse Leisure and Tennis Centre where she does personal training and teaches fitness classes. She is planning to do additional training in Kettlebells and Boot Camp and eventually wants to set up her own mobile personal training company. “I don’t regret for one moment leaving university. I have a strong sense of purpose now and love my work” says Ashleigh. “I’m definitely on my way to an exciting fitness career and The Training Room has given me an excellent start,” she says.
