Tuesday is World Smile Day! If that's not enough to get you grinning, here are 5 ways to instantly boost your mood and put a big smile on your face.
Healthy people are happy people, but sometimes we need a little helping hand to bounce out of bed smiling… particularly on a Tuesday! Here's how to make sure World Smile Day is a super-smiley one for you this year.
Exercise early in the day
Ever noticed how much better your day seems to be when you exercise in the morning? Start your day with a gym visit, a powerwalk, a swim or a bike ride and observe the knock-on effects as your day unfolds. People who manage to grab even a short exercise burst in the morning tend to be happier, more productive and more focused throughout the day. Getting a workout in first thing in the morning will boost your endorphins, help you make healthier food choices, spark your metabolism and lead to a more successful day at work. If that doesn't put a smile on your face, what will!
Make an effort to walk more on World Smile Day and see how this small but significant lifestyle choice makes you smile. Walking is super-healthy, bringing with it a host of benefits from cardiovascular fitness and lower blood pressure to better circulation and the release of helpful hormones. It's good for your budget, and for the environment. And, whether you walk in a town or city, or get out into the countryside, you'll see aspects of daily life which you miss when you're in the car. See what you can spot on your walk which makes you smile.
Grab some fresh air
There's nothing like a breath of fresh air to bring a smile to your face. No matter how busy next Tuesday is for you, get outside for at least 10 minutes. Grab time on your break at work, walk to or from work, or make the effort to run errands on foot rather than in the car. Take deep, grounding breaths, and pause for a moment to savour the sounds and feelings of being outside under the open sky.
Eat as nature intended
We all know how eating well makes us feel healthier and happier. On World Smile Day, make conscious choices about your meals, snacks and drinks. Eat foods as close to their natural state as possible, turn down packaged, processed, man-made foods, and make as many of your meals as you can from scratch. Natural, unprocessed foods and ingredients pack a greater nutritional punch and will flood every cell in your body with vitamins, minerals, fibre, micronutrients, amino acids, complex carbohydrates and essential fatty acids. Your body will thank you for it, and a smile will spread across your face!
Treat yourself with superfoods
Why not treat yourself on World Smile Day, but not with junk food. Turn to one of nature's many superfoods for a tasty, nutrient-dense treat which actually benefits your body. Dark chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa (go for 70% or more), good quality coffee (try an Americano or espresso), dark berries (great as a snack with real Greek yoghurt), raw nuts and seeds, and dark green leafy vegetables are all treats your body will thank you for. Eat well and you'll have reason to smile every day, not just on World Smile Day!
