what-qualifications-do-i-need-to-become-a-personal-trainer

It’s easy to assume that to get started as a Personal Trainer, you’d need to complete a University degree or just finished off an Apprenticeship. That simply isn’t the case. In order for you to get started, the barrier to entry is not as high as you might think. As long as you’re determined, self-motivated, love physical fitness and helping others, there’s no reason why you cannot pursue a career as a Personal Trainer.

But where to begin? What qualifications are needed to get going? And what options are there for those looking to specialize in a specific area? Whatever your goals and ambitions are - to run private lessons or lead classes in the gym, we promise that there’s an easy route to take with tons of support and will lead the way to an amazing Personal Trainer career!

Here’s a guide to how Personal Training courses operate, the necessary steps to becoming a fitness expert and breaking down all the Levels along the way. A roadmap to assist with choosing what course is right for you, based on experience.

What Level 2 in Gym Instructing allows you to do:

Undertaking a Level 2 in Gym Instructing is an ideal foundation to learn about health and fitness for those at the very beginning of their careers. While studying at Level 2, you’ll learn about practical matters like: health and safety, client support and planning gym based exercise. Not only that, but it also covers more in-depth aspects to learning about the body with an emphasis on physiology and anatomy. It is the equivalent of a GCSE level A-C or NVQ level 2.

Fitness professionals with a Level 2 certification are qualified to work on the gym floor as well as provide instructions to new members - however, you would not yet be qualified to work as a Personal Trainer. You’ll be working as a Fitness Instructor and gain invaluable experience in order to work up to getting your Level 3. You’ll also learn to build client reporte, observe Personal Trainers in action and gain industry knowledge.

You can get started with expert tutor assistance, learning tools and guidance from our Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing right here at The Training Room!

Working as a Personal Trainer with Level 3:

Achieving your Level 3 is when you will be able to make your mark as a Personal Trainer! While studying, the focus will enhance your knowledge from Level 2 considerably, this would include: programming personal training with clients, learning how to develop personal training sessions and builds up your physiology and anatomy education. Level 3 would be the equivalent of A-Levels or NVQ 3.

You’ll also be able to advise clients on weight management, nutrition, rehabilitation and injury prevention. Once gaining your Level 3, it will open doors to train clients on a one-on-one basis or group exercise classes while at the gym and have the credentials to work effectively as a freelancer too! You’ll be able to step into your Personal Training career with confidence and a backlog of experience.

What does Level 4 have to offer?

Upgrading further up to Level 4 would be to give yourself a competitive edge, boost your health and fitness knowledge within a specific skill set and keep striving for expertise within a specialized area. Level 3 is the minimum required to land your dream job in Personal Training, whereas Level 4 can take your knowledge up a notch if you’re seeking to learn more… as well as raise your earning potential!

Here at The Training Room, we happen to offer a first-class Level 4 in Strength & Conditioning that teaches students how to design detailed needs analyses for clients on top of resistance training and how to structure long-term athletic development.
