If you’re eager to hit the gym and get in shape, we’ve just the workout to get you started. Often the hardest part of fitness is motivating yourself to do it. And for this reason, we never underestimate the value of a quick fitness fix.
We’re talking, interval training. Whether you’re out of the habit of exercising or looking to try something new; interval training is a great way to get you on your feet and having fun.
What’s Interval Training?
Interval training is a workout that consists of high bursts of activity vs. rest over a fixed period of time. The intervals at which you alternate high vs. low activity are merely minutes long, making it perfect for those on the go. This workout is said to burn calories at a quicker rate, whilst building stamina and endurance.
Ease yourself into interval training with an 8 minute workout. According to the experts, it offers all the ‘better-body benefits’ of a 30 minute gym session. So why not add it to your weekly routine?
Comfy trainers at the ready, let’s start. Prepare for short bouts of intense exercise (lasting 15 seconds each time) vs. cool downs.
0.0 Warm up with a brisk stroll: as in all sport, warming up means you’re less prone to injuries
2.00 Then sprint as fast you can: put all your energy into those 15 seconds of exercise
2.15 Return to a leisurely stroll for just 30 seconds
2.45 And back to sprinting!
3.00 Walk for 30 seconds
3.30 Repeat this pattern of sprint-then-walk until you reach your 8 minute limit
8.00 And your interval training is complete!
If you can’t get enough of interval training, there’s nothing stopping you from increasing the time from 8 to 20 minutes, or even replacing a quick sprint for an exercise bike or cross trainer. The beauty of this type of training is that you’re not restricted to one machine – it can be whatever you want it to be!
