Martin - Software Development
What made you decide to take a Software Developer course with The Training Room?
I was ready for a change of career and I’ve always been interested in programming. I found this course by The Training Room website and spoke to my assessor about the finer details like career support. I saw this course as a great way to get exposure to programming.
What did you enjoy about the course?
The tutors were great, they were always eager and willing to help. My tutor was always on hand to help me; he even prepared me for the interviews I had. I really appreciated this as my tutor has been part of the industry and it gave me great insights into what to expect and how to perform in my interviews.
Our IT students often fit their course around work and life commitments. How did you find fitting the course around your personal life?
I didn’t find it too bad at all. I was working full-time as an engineer and managed to still find enough time to fit in my studies. I’ve learnt online before, so I was prepared with the understanding that I’d need to be disciplined and pick up the work as and when I could. It’s tempting to come home after work and sit on the sofa, but changing those habits for the short duration of the course really pay off. Now I can come home after work and relax!
What were you doing before the course?
Before I took the course, my trade was as an engineer. I’d been wanting to change my career as I no longer wanted to work in that industry. I’m so pleased I took the step to get trained up as a software developer, it’s really paid off.
Where has the course taken you?
I’ve got one unit left on the course, but I’ve already got a job lined up! In a month’s time I’ll be starting as a Graduate Software Developer with a company called SwarmOnline. They develop apps for smartphones, tablets and wearable technology; I’m excited to get started in my new career!
Having taken the course yourself, what advice would you give anyone thinking of becoming a Software Developer?
I would always recommend for anyone looking to become a software developer to do their research. You can’t always rely on other people telling you what to do – you need to be proactive and find the right type of course and training that suits you.
The industry is really competitive so you need to stand out from other people applying for the job you want. Having said that, it’s a really exciting industry to be part of, I’d recommend it!
