Nicola - Teaching Assistant
What was the reason you chose to take a Teaching Assistant course?
I was previously self-employed and running my own business for one morning a week, I wanted to get into a new career that would still be flexible to fit around my family life. On top of this, it's also very rewarding work!
Why did you choose The Training Room?
I researched courses online and decided I needed that flexibility to study at home. I then came across The Training Room's e-learning course and ended up going with it due to the good reviews.
What did you enjoy about your course?
The entire course was great, but I enjoyed completing the observation part of the course where I got to work in a school. I also enjoyed the unit on communication, I think that was the most memorable unit for me.
Were you able to fit your course around other commitments/your lifestyle?
Yes, absolutely! Plus, it only took me around 5 months to complete compared with 12 months at college.
What was your experience of the course?
The course was amazing! My tutor was really helpful - work was always marked and returned promptly and any questions I had were always answered quickly.
What's the biggest challenge you encountered on your course?
The most challenging part, for me, was the reflective units. I found it difficult to reflect on my own work finding poor aspects to write about - mainly because I enjoyed the entirety of the course and didn't really struggle with it!
How have you used your qualification?
I've used my qualification to secure several interviews and it's given me the foundation I needed to complete further qualifications. Soon, I'm going to take my Autism and ADHD Awareness courses so that I can specialise as a Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant.
Did you utilise the career support team?
Yes, Megan was amazing! She made my CV look fantastic and put me in touch with several teaching agencies. I've only just graduated so I'm still working as a volunteer in a school, but I hope to secure a paid role very soon.
Having completed the course, what advice would you give people who are considering it themselves?
The benefits are huge: flexible learning, value for money, career support, completed in less than half the time of college - the list goes on!
I would recommend studying with The Training Room to anyone who's thinking about becoming a Teaching Assistant - it really has been amazing! To all current students, I'd say do your research and never be afraid to ask questions.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I'd just like to say a huge thank you for all the support and the amazing opportunity The Training Room have given me.
