The Player Resettlement Programme (PRP) specifically aims to answer the ‘what’s next?’ question after a career in professional sport. In a nutshell, The PRP is a fast-track career resettlement programme, designed specifically for sports professionals by sports and career experts.

The PRP aids the transition of:

  • Sportspeople at the end of their careers retiring from sport
  • Sportspeople struggling through injury or early retirement
  • Sportspeople at academy level to ensure a career ‘safety net’

Due to their lifelong commitment to sport, and often from a young age, ex athletes can sometimes lack the professional qualifications and sector specific career knowledge to fast-track an exit from sport. However, on the other hand, sports professional are in extremely high demand by employers across multiple sectors and verticals due to their disciplined nature, tenacity and work ethic.

What this creates is a disconnect between the two and a gap forms. The PRP bridges this gap between employers and sports professionals making an exit from sport – empowering career choice, relevant skills and career placement opportunities to athletes from a range of sporting backgrounds.

Liam Plunkett

Cricket World Cup winner and England fast-bowler, Liam Plunkett teamer up with The PRP to complete his Level 3 and 4 Qualification in Personal Training and widen his professional skillset in preparation for the future.
"We all know that nothing is guaranteed in professional sport; we all get older and things can change at the flick of a switch, so i recognise the importance of planning ahead. An injury or stroke of bad luck is all you need to bring your career to a sudden stop, which is why I've teamed up with The Training Room, in my opinion, the best health and fitness training provider in the UK, to ensure that I have something to jump straight into once my time in whites is over".

Former Wasp’s rugby captain, John Hart, is one of the PRP’s latest recruits and will begin his Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Gym Instructing and Personal Training with The Training Room in June. Following his retirement from rugby, Hart has worked as a secondary school P.E teacher and now as an events manager for the family business but misses the bright lights of professional sport. He hopes this qualification will be the catalyst for his return, albeit in a new role.

“When my playing career came to an end, I struggled to come to terms with the change,” John began. “Although I’ve enjoyed my other roles since then, sport has always been my passion, so having the opportunity to train as a PT through the PRP could enable me to eventually get back into the sporting environment. If it leads to me training elite sportspeople that would be amazing, but I’m open-minded. Whether a person simply wants to get fitter and healthier or has an invested interest in sport, I’m looking forward to supporting those people to achieve their goals and improve their lives."
