How to Become a Cyber Security Technologist

What is a Cyber Security Technologist?

Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to secure computing systems in order to prevent unexpected attacks? Well, now you can… by becoming a Cyber Security Technologist!

As a Cyber Security Technologist, you’ll primarily be maintaining a company’s security systems by constant testing and ensuring virus protection. You’ll shield the assets of a company by ensuring only permitted personnel can access a company’s network through verifying their identity.

You’ll also plan, manage and advance a company’s computer network to ensure the appropriate level of security is maintained to prevent potential breaches of data. Essentially, you’ll be applying your knowledge of cyber threats to ensure protection of your company’s systems.

Where can you work?

During the past 5 years, the number of available jobs in the IT industry has doubled! This means there is no shortage of opportunity – provided you are suitably qualified.

In terms of companies to work for, there is a vast range of both roles and industries that you can work in – including forensics, education and risk analysis! Such is the variety of roles that they could see you based in an office, remotely or even as a consultant.

If this excites you and you’d like to read some of the characteristics which could lead you to being successful, read our 6 Signs You Should Start a Career in IT blog.

Career Requirement

To kickstart a career as a Cyber Security Technologist, you will first need to get some type of qualification because without this, as we all know, you won’t get considered for many roles. To begin a career in any role in IT, of course you will need to learn and know the fundamentals of hardware, software and networks – amongst other terminology which you will pick up during the courses.

When specialising in Cyber Security, however, there are many options out there which include a degree and technical certification. There are benefits to both options and employers will also have their preferred option – meaning committing the time and funds to completing a full university degree is no longer a necessity.

The required qualifications, of course, have a caveat: you’ll need the appropriate personal characteristics to support. Flexibility, pride, perseverance, insightfulness, being collaborative and creative are just a few of the traits potential employers will be seeking out alongside the professional qualifications. If you have even a few of these, you’ll be an appealing prospect.
