Zoe - Personal Trainer
What were your motivations for getting into Personal Training?
I have always been into fitness and exercise since I was a teenager, and over the years have trained with various different Personal Trainers who have taught me a great deal about the benefits of exercise and how different exercise styles and methods could help to shape and sculpt my body. As I got older, my passion grew and I began to consider studying to become a Personal Trainer so I could build on my knowledge to assist with my own training - but I could never find the time.
Last year, after a 12 year career in the finance industry, I was made redundant and it allowed me to finally find the time to follow this passion of mine. I was able to make use of my time at home to work on my fitness, build on my knowledge and study the industry. Originally, this was just to better equip myself for my own future fitness goals. However, after a short while studying, I considered that this could be a step towards a new career in helping people become fitter, healthier and happier through Personal Training which interested me even further.
What were you doing before the course?
Before the course I was working full time in the banking industry as a Customer Service Manager.
My role was to oversee risk management within my branch whilst also managing and motivating a team of up to 10 people. The aim was to provide our customers with excellent customer service and to achieve their individual key performance indicators relating to product sales and diary fulfilment.
Why did you choose The Training Room?
Once I had decided that I was going to study Personal Training, it was just a case of finding the right company to do this with. I spent hours searching the internet and reading up on the different types, costs and reviews of courses and providers that were available. I narrowed my search down to 3 separate course providers and made verbal contact with each of them.
I decided to choose The Training Room as after a telephone conversation they were the most helpful, providing me with all the information I needed to have in order to make an informed decision. At the same time they made me feel valued as a potential student and in no way did they use any biased opinions or pushy sales techniques, which I found with other providers which instantly made me disregard such companies.
What did you enjoy about the course?
I really enjoyed the fact that the course options were so flexible and that I was able to complete my studies at my own pace, from the comfort of my own home. I was assigned a tutor who immediately made contact with me and made me feel welcomed. They also provided assistance throughout my studies even though I was based at home and not in their physical classrooms.
Were you able to fit your course around other commitments/your lifestyle?
Being able to study at home via the e-learning option made my studies so much more relaxed and extremely flexible, meaning that I could study and complete all the relevant assessments and exams to suit my lifestyle and other commitments.
What was your experience of the course?
My experience of the course overall was positive. Although the tutors were not available all day every day to assist with queries due to classroom commitments, I found that if ever I needed their help or support they were quick in responding to my emails and making me feel supported throughout my journey.
Feedback given off the back of my assessments and exams was detailed and helpful in improving upon my skills, techniques and knowledge, which overall helped me to pass my course.
What’s the biggest challenge you encountered on your course?
The biggest challenge that I feel that I encountered on the course was probably getting over my own anxieties when having to video my summative and formative assessments, and my belief in my own capabilities.
What was the most memorable aspect of your course?
I think my most memorable moment of the course was when I received my outcome emails following my assessments and exams. Receiving an email from your assigned tutor days or weeks after completing your assessment and being told that you’ve PASSED is a great feeling. This confirms that you are able to apply what you have learnt in a positive way and then receive the relevant feedback to make you even better.
Tell me about your career since graduating from The Training Room – what have you done and what does your future look like?
Since gaining my Level 3 qualification, I have gone on to use my knowledge to improve upon my own fitness goals and the structure in which I train. I have also attended a job interview for a Personal Trainer role in which I was successful! However, I decided to decline the offer but have since started working with an NHS Trust supporting individuals with learning disabilities with the aim of starting my own Personal Training business from home in the near future.
I had already lined up a new job prior to finishing my studies so didn’t fully utilise the Career Support Team, but I was contacted by the team both at the beginning and end of my studies to explain how they could help and to offer their support, which I appreciated!
Have you completed any other training since graduating with us?
Not yet, but I do still have a Nutrition course to complete which I was given by The Training Room in addition to my Level 3 Personal Training studies as an offer for paying for my course in full up front.
Having completed the course, what advice would you give people who are considering it themselves?
The best advice I could give is try to focus on one section of the course at a time - really taking in the knowledge it is giving you - and using the workbooks provided, alongside the training videos (if studying from home), as these provide you with a great deal more information and contact around each training subject.
Also, practice your learning and incorporate it into your own training regime to help you fully understand the benefits and mechanisms of each exercise and piece of learning.
What benefit do you see to other students who are thinking of taking a course with us?
Anyone that is considering getting into the fitness industry or studying to become a Personal Trainer would benefit from doing their Personal Training qualification through The Training Room, as they offer a number of different packages with flexible studies and flexible payment options to suit all.
The staff are helpful, friendly and welcoming and provide much needed information and feedback to get you to where you need to be.
